Three members of a family were shot dead by unidentified assailants at Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar district early Monday.

The victims were identified as Ahmed Hossain (60), his son Syedul Amin (28), and daughter Asma Begum (13).

Police said that the incident occurred around 5:00 am when a gang of miscreants stormed into the residence of Ahmed Hossain at Camp 17 near Lal Pahar and opened fire on them indiscriminately.

Ahmed and Syedul died on the spot while Asma sustained severe injuries.

Later, local people rescued Asma from the spot and took her to MSF Hospital in Kutupalong. As her condition deteriorated, doctors referred her to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital.

The police said that Asma was brought to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital in a critical condition and on-duty doctors declared her dead on her arrival.

The bodies have been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for postmortem examination.

Mohammad Iqbal, Additional Deputy Inspector General of 14 Armed Police Battalion which is responsible for the camp’s security, said that a gang of 15-20 criminals stormed into Ahmed's house and opened fire on victims.

After getting information, he said, police went to the scene, but the attackers managed to flee, sensing their presence.

Police suspect that the criminals might have carried out the gun attack due to Syedul’s involvement with Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) for a long time.
