Three ‘drug dealers’ killed in ‘shootout’

Three alleged drug dealers were killed in a “gunfights” with police at Chakaria of Cox’s Bazar district early Friday. Four policemen, including the OC of Chakaria police station, were injured in the incident.

Police recovered 44,000 pieces of yaba, two firearms, six rounds of ammunition and 15 rounds of used bullet casings.

The shootout took place at around 3:30 am on Friday (July 31) inside the Amtali Gorjan Bagan in the hilly area of Baniyarchhara on Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway.

Sensing presence of the police, the criminals opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defense that triggered the gunfight.

On information that a gang of peddlers was at Chakaria, the police sent a team to raid the area. Sensing their presence, the criminals fired at the cops.

In this 3 cops including OC Aminul Islam, Constable Sajjad Hossain and Md Sabuj were severly injured and have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.

Police could not immediately confirm the identities of the three Yaba traders and armed terrorists killed in the shootout.

Chakaria police inspector (investigation) Mizanur Rahman told the media that two drug dealers named Zaheda Begum and Mozaffar Ahmed were arrested along with 6,000 pieces of yaba from the main area of Baraitali New Road around 1.30pm on Thursday. Later, during the initial interrogation of the police, they informed that a large consignment of yaba would be handed over in the hilly area of Baniyarchhara on the same night. Police also launched an operation to rescue those.

Habibur Rahman told the media that three unidentified drug dealers and armed terrorists were rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex during the shootout with police. The on-duty doctor of the emergency department declared them dead. Three separate cases are being filed under the Murder, Weapons and Drugs Act.
