Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said that those who do not observe March 7 do not believe in the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh.
He on Monday morning said this while exchanging views with the journalists after paying homage to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Bangabandhu Bhaban premises at Dhanmondi No. 32 in the capital. Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said, 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the Bengali nation of all time, transformed an unarmed nation into an armed nation through his speech on March 7, 1971. This is a remarkable speech in the pages of history. Today, the question arises as to how much those who do not accept the 7th of March believe in freedom and sovereignty.
"Our allies, including the BNP, do not observe the 7th of March, but by denying the 7th of March, we do not have a war of independence, we do not have a freedom struggle. I urge the people to be vigilant about them”, he said. "When the BNP is celebrating another day instead of March 7 today, it proves that they do not really believe in the spirit of the liberation war and the liberation war," said Hasan Mahmud.
On the occasion of the historic March 7, the Minister attended a discussion meeting, documentary exhibition and cultural programme of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at the Information Building auditorium at Kakrail in the capital as the chief guest.
Expressing deep respect to Bangabandhu, the Information and Broadcasting Minister said that in this speech the Father of the Nation had practically declared the independence of Bangladesh but had done so in such a way that the Pakistani rulers had nothing to do but watch. This speech not only inspired the Bengalis in the mantra of liberation, this speech inspired the liberation of all the oppressed people of the world from age to age.
Bangabandhu's March 7th speech is a source of great pride for us and at the same time an unforgettable document to keep the spirit of our liberation war alive- added Dr Hasan Mahmud.
