Farmers of Tentulia in Panchagarh experienced a bumper production of Boro and IRRI paddy this season. However, the farmers expressed their dissatisfaction over the price of the paddy.
Panchagarh Department of Agricultural Extension Deputy Director’s office sources said Boro and IRRI paddy was cultivated at a total of 33 thousand 635 hectare of land in the district this season. A bumper yield of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) invented BRRI paddy 92, 100, 102 and 108 was noticed in the district. Around 7.5 ton yield of this variety is predicted per hectare. Besides, experimental cultivation of high yielding BRRI-89, 28 and 29 verities has started. The harvesting of early verities of paddy has started in the region. However, the harvesting of other verities will be started within two weeks.
Farmer Abul Hossain of Berang River area said a bumper production of BRRI-29 paddy was experienced in his two acres of land. However, extreme heatwave and high production cost may impact on the profit.
Boro paddy farmer of Baroghuria village of Tentulia Sadar, Mominul, said that he had cultivated Boro and IRRI paddy on his two Bighas of land. The 28 and 29 verities of paddy were cultivated and a good yield was experienced. But, the cost of labor, fertilizer and pesticides is too high so there might be less profit.
Boro and IRRI paddy farmer of Magura village, Abdul Latif, said I have cultivated paddy on one Bigha of land. Around Tk 20 thousand cost is needed for the cultivation and harvesting. The yield may be 25 to 30 maunds. The price of per maund paddy is Tk 1200 to Tk 1300.
Tentulia Upazila Agricultural Officer Tamanna Ferdous said Boro and IRRI paddy was cultivated on a total of 4,900 hectares of land. Bumper production of Boro-IRRI was experienced in the area despite drought. The farmers will be benefitted if they get fair price in the market.
Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension, Agriculturist M Abdul Matin, said all kinds of crops grew well this season as there was adequate sunlight. Paddy harvesting has started on a limited scale in the district. The harvesting will be started in full swing within 10-15 days.
