People of the country, especially in the northern region, have been experiencing intense cold coupled with the chilly wind for the last couple of days that has thrown normal life out of gear.
Day laborers, children, and the elderly are the worst sufferers of the shivering cold. The thick fog, however, is discouraging people from venturing outside unless absolutely necessary. Vehicles are moving with headlights on.
Meanwhile, the temperature has dropped slightly than previous day. The lowest temperature of this winter season was recorded in Tetulia of Panchagarh at 5.8 degrees Celsius on Friday. On the other hand, the lowest temperature 7.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Tetulia on Saturday (January 27) and it was the country’s lowest temperature for the day.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and the districts of Gopalgonj Kishoreganj, Moulavibazar, Jashore, Kushtia and Chuadanga and it may continue.
The BMD in its regular bulletin on Saturday says, “Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country. Moderate to thick fog may occur at places over the river basins and light to moderate fog at places elsewhere over the country during midnight to morning.”
Night temperature may fall slightly and day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.
Although the temperature dropped slightly on Saturday, the ongoing cold wave is likely to continue for another day or two in Kurigram, Panchagarh and other districts of the northern region.
The temperature fell to 8.5C in Kurigram on Saturday, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 6.8C in the district on Friday.
A moderate cold wave has been sweeping over the district for the last week. Normal life has been disrupted by the shivering cold, further intensified by dense fog and chilling air. The sun has remained visible, but the cold wind is giving the people a hard time.
People were hardly seen in the morning as a bone-chilling cold persisted in the area. The low-income people are the most affected, as they cannot go out for work due to the lack of warm clothes. They complain about not getting aid from any government or private organisation.
Kurigram Agriculture Meteorological Office observer Subal Chandra said that the moderate cold wave in the district will continue for another day or two.
On the other hand, the country’s lowest temperature of 7.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Tetulia of Panchagarh district for the second consecutive day on Saturday.
The district has been grappling with intense cold, disrupting day-to-day life, especially affecting children and the elderly.
Though the sun is visible, a mild cold wave has been prevailing in the district for the past few days.
The day labourers are the worst sufferers due to lack of daily jobs amid cold. Some people were seen keeping warm by burning logs while most preferred to stay indoors.
