A teenage student drowned while taking a bath in the sea in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Mahmudur Rahman, 16, son of Didarul Alam, resident of Bangla Bazar area under Jhilongjha union in Cox’s Bazar sadar upazila.
He was a ninth grade student in local Jumcchari Dakhil Madrasa.
Senior Assistant Commissioner (General Certificate and Tourism Cell) of Cox’s Bazar District Administration, Md Tanvir Hossain, confirmed the matter. He said the incident occurred at the Sugandha point sea beach in Cox’s Bazar at 12:30pm on Saturday.
Quoting the locals and the eyewitnesses, Tanvir Hossain said, a madrasa student named Mahmudur Rahman from Banglabazar area of Cox's Bazar Sadar, along with six friends, came to the beach on Saturday morning. After going to the Sugandha Point of the beach, they played football together for a while before all of them went for a swim in the sea. At one point, Mahmudur Rahman began to drown. His friends panicked and shouted for help, prompting lifeguards and beach workers to rush to his aid. They managed to rescue him in critical condition.
Later, he was taken to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
