Target to produce 21,000 tonnes of wheat in Jhenaidah

Farmers in six Jhenaidah upazilas are going to produce over 21 thousand mts of wheat on their 5,230 hectares of land in the current season where they had achieved better in price and yield both in the last season. The set target is likely to be fulfilled in this season as they are expecting to harvest at least 4.04 mts of the grain from each hectare of the land. It has encouraged them to bring additional 57 hectares of land in the current season, said the farmers and the officials of the department of agricultural extension (DAE) in Khamarbari in Jhenaidah.

Abdus Salam, a farmer of village Jalalpur in bordering Moheshpur upazila when contacted said he had produced wheat on his two bighas of land in the last season. But he had expanded the area to three bighas in the current season when he had sold the grain at a good price in the market. It had encouraged him like others to give attention to the farming. 

Nanda Dulal Biswas of village Kamarkundu in Jhenaidah sadar upazila had expressed almost same opinion about the wheat farming. They said the increasing price of foodgrains has been regaining their faith gradually. The farmers said as there was not enough rainfall, they have started provide irrigation on the wheat plots to ensure nutrition of the plants so that they could ensure mature grains in time. 

A source related to the DAE deputy director’s office in Jhenaidah said they had set target to produce 20,899 tons of wheat on a total of 5,173 hectares of land in six upazilas of Jhenaidah this season. Expected yield of wheat on each hectare was 4.04 tons. 

But the farmers had exceeded the target and brought 5,230 hectares which was 57 hectares additional than the target.

Upazila-wise break up of wheat farming area was 790 hectares in Jhenaidah Sadar, 325 hectares in Kaliganj, 130 hectares in Kotchandpur, 8,200 hectares in bordering Moheshpur, 2,860 hectares in Shailkupa and remaining 310 hectares of land in Harinakundu upazila. 

The sources said the farmers in the district had produced 20,899 mts of wheat on their 5,173 hectares in Jhenaidah district last season. Average yield on each hectare was 4.04 mts, the sources said.

When contacted DAE deputy director in Jhenaidah Asgar Ali said, the farmers of Jhenaidah are most caring about their crops all along. They (DAE) had advised their filed level officials better known as SAAOs to stand by the farmers so that they might be benefited from any crops they produce.
