Sylhet Zila Parishad has conducted an eviction drive years to rescue its lands occupied illegally for the last 18 years at the city’s Badaghat bazar area.

On Sunday morning, the authorites concerned launched the drive and demolished 70 semi-buildings and tin shade shops installed in the occupied lands of four acres owned by Sylhet Zila Parishad.

According to Zila Parishad authority, around 4 acres of lands at the City’s Badaghat bazar area were given lease for the term one year (Eksana Lease) by Zila Parishad about 18 years ago and in this term, the contract of such leasing ends after one year and the property returns back to the owner. But the land did not back to Zila Parishad authority for the last 18 years. Those who took the lease of that property did not even renew the contract and installed permanent establishments on those lands illegally.

Zila Parishad authority noticed the matter recently and after few discussions with the stockholders, the authority has given notice to the parties to remove all illegal establishments on such lands but they did not obey the order.

Later on Sunday morning at around 9am, the eviction team led by the Parishad’s chairman Advocate Nasir Uddin Khan with the help of Jalalabad Police Station conducted a drive and evicted all illegal establishments by bulldozers.

Panel chairman of Sylhet Zila Parishad, Mustak Ahmed Polash told Bangladesh Post ‘under the term of Eksana lease, there is not rule to install any permanent establishment but the traders were doing it illegally. So, the authority conducted this eviction drive and retrieved the lands.
