Sylhet becomes country’s first electric pole free city

For the first time in the country, underground electrification project was launched in Sylhet. Removing the electric poles from the roadside electricity is being supplied from the ground line like developed countries. As a result, Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) Mazar Gate road in Sylhet became free from the tangled knots of cables overhead. 

On Sunday (January 5) morning, the electric poles were removed and the underground lines started operating. SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Syed Toufiqul Hadi, councilor of ward-1 of SCC, Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Abu Taher Md. Shoyeb, Power Division officials and residents of Shahjalal Dargah area were present at the time.

Sylhet City Corporation has taken a step forward to make the city a smart digital city by reducing the tangles of cable. At the same time, other service lines were also removed along with electric poles in the area. SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said the successful supply of underground electrification project started from Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) Mazar area. Electric poles and other service lines are being removed along the road. As a result, Shahjalal (RA) Mazar area is relieved of wires increasing the beauty of the area.

The mayor said that after observing the experimental supply for the last 15-20 days, full supply was launched from Sunday. The facility would be implemented in all areas of Sylhet City Corporation gradually. The mayor added that from now on, no person or institute can dig the roads with underground lines, without informing Power Division and City Corporation authorities. The Mayor urged cooperation from all to maintain constant power supply in the city.

Syed Toufiqul Hadi said that SCC has gone one-step further in making Sylhet into a digital city. Dream turned into reality by ensuring underground electrification. He thanked the SCC authorities and the government for starting the project from his ward.

Abu Taher Md. Shoyeb, President of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industries said, "We are happy that the project is first implemented in Sylhet. He thanked SCC, Power Division and the government on behalf of Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industries for launching underground electrification at the fastest time.

Chief Engineer of SCC, Md. Noor Azizur Rahman said launching underground power lines was a challenging task. The Power Division have done that successfully with the cooperation of City Corporation. Continuous monitoring by the Power Division is needed to ensure uninterrupted power supply so Sylhet City Corporation will continue to cooperate.

Under the funding of Bangladesh Power Development Board and initiative of Sylhet City Corporation, a pilot project will be constructed in the city at a cost of about Tk 55 crore. Under this project 25 kilometer 11kv line, 18 kilometer 0.4kv line and 2 circuit kilometer 33kv line will be installed in the city. City’s electric supply line will go to Chowhatta via Amborkhana from the Sub-Station of the area. One line from Chowhatta will go unto Sylhet Circuit House via Zindabazar and Court point area. Another will go from Chowhatta to Sylhel Osmani Medical College Hospital.
