Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif has said that Syed Ashraful Islam was a very gentle and wise politician in the country.
"Syed Ashraf was one of the dependable vanguards of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and he was always a fearless politician in all times", he said.
Hanif was talking to reporters after paying homage at the Banani cemetery on marking the third death anniversary of former Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Monday.
He said the role of Syed Ashraf in many national crises will always be remembered.
"Syed Ashraf's role will be memorable in the history of Bangladesh, especially during the caretaker government in 2007, when the conspiracy started in the country's politics with the arrest of two leaders", he said.
The joint general secretary of the Awami League said Syed Ashraf played a significant role in tackling the tough situation on May 5, 2013, created by Hefazat-e-Islam.
He said Syed Ashraf, the able son of Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam, the acting president of Bangladesh's first government and one of the four national leaders, was completely an honest person, efficient organiser and a leader of mass people.
Hanif said the President had called for dialogue with the political parties to form a trustworthy Election Commission.
"When BNP was in power, they formed the Election Commission as per their wish, they did not feel the need to talk to anyone, but as we believe in democracy, the President called for dialogue with all the political parties to form a neutral election commission," he said. He said that if anyone did not take part in the dialogue, it would be an indication of their irresponsibility.
"I believe that everyone will participate in the election...Even if one of the two parties does not take part in the dialogue, the President will have to form an election commission due to his constitutional obligation", Hanif said.
Regarding BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's medical treatment abroad, Hanif said, "We also want Khaleda Zia's early recovery but it must be remembered that the law is the same for everyone, there is no law for any particular person".
"Khaleda has no other alternative but to confess her guilt and seek mercy to the president if she wants to go to abroad," he said.
