Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed, has refuted allegations of nepotism in the university's recruitment process. He assured that all appointments were made following proper procedures and based on merit.
According to documents, Professor Ahmed has appointed 376 people to various departments within the university. During his tenure, he has appointed 153 teachers, 35 officers, 54 third-class employees, and 134 fourth-class employees. The university administration has claimed that all the appointments were made based on merit and to bring mobility to official activities.
The VC further added that the university has always hired the best-qualified teachers and staff without any consideration of their alma mater. He emphasized that the appointed teachers are doing very well in their respective duties, and many of them have research papers in prominent journals. “We did not consider who came from which university, passed from which university in the recruitment of teachers. We have always hired the best with the best results and qualified teachers as teachers," said Professor Ahmed.
He also assured that no one was recruited without advertisement or violating the procedure. He has been working at SUST for almost seven years and always trying to do his best for the betterment of the university and its students. Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed has been appointed as Vice-Chancellor of SUST for his significant contribution to the progress of the university in quality education, research, infrastructural development, resolution of session congestion, establishment of good governance, and accountability. He was appointed as the 11th Vice Chancellor on August 21, 2017, and became the first one who was appointed for the second time on August 21, 2021.
During his tenure, he appointed a total of 376 people to various departments and offices, including 153 teachers, 35 officers, 54 third-class employees, and 134 fourth-class employees, to advance the university in producing ideal, well-educated, and quality graduates.
Among the 153 appointed teachers, 103 were from SUST graduates, 20 from Dhaka University (DU), 13 from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), 8 from Chittagong University (CU), 5 from Jahangirnagar University (JU), 2 from Rajshahi University (RU), and 1 from Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
The Vice-Chancellor also appointed 35 officers for two terms so far, with 18 people appointed from Greater Sylhet (Sylhet-Sunamganj-Habiganj-Moulvibazar), 2 people from Greater Cumilla (Cumilla-Brahmanbaria), and 15 people from other districts of the country. Additionally, 54 people have been appointed as third-class employees, with 36 people from Greater Sylhet (Sylhet-Sunamganj-Habiganj-Moulvibazar), 7 people from Greater Cumilla (Cumilla-Brahmanbaria), and 11 people from other districts of the country. Moreover, 134 people have been appointed as fourth-class employees to bring mobility to official activities, with 97 people appointed from Greater Sylhet (Sylhet-Sunamganj-Habiganj-Moulvibazar), 6 people from Greater Cumilla (Cumilla-Brahmanbaria), and 31 people from other districts of the country. The university administration has claimed that the appointments were made based on merit and to bring mobility to official activities. The Vice-Chancellor has contributed significantly to advancing the university in producing ideal, well-educated, and quality graduates.
