The male dormitories of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) will reopen on October 8, and classes will resume on October 20, as confirmed by the university's acting registrar, Syed Salim Md Abdul Qadir. This decision was made during an emergency syndicate meeting held on Wednesday.
Students can move back into their dorms between October 8 and 15. Academic activities, including classes and exams, are set to restart on October 20. The acting registrar also mentioned that all exam-related tasks must be completed by November 19.
Classes and exams at SUST have been on hold since May 26, initially due to the Eid-ul-Azha holidays and summer vacation. This break was further extended by a teachers' strike over a pension issue. Following student protests, the university was left without administrative control, delaying the reopening.
The situation worsened on August 26 when local residents removed male students from the dormitories, accusing some members of the Chhatra League of occupying the halls. Since then, male students have been unable to return to their dorms, though female dorms remained operational throughout this period.
This reopening offers relief to students and staff who have been waiting for the situation to stabilize. The university hopes to restore normal academic activities after months of disruption, allowing students to continue their studies without further delays.
