As part of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and becoming the first university in the country to increase the use of renewable energy, Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) is foraying into green energy.

For this purpose, an agreement has been signed between JUST and Super Star Renewable Energy Limited.

This agreement was signed on Thursday morning in the conference room of JUST's administrative building under the 'Operational Expenditure (OPEX)' model under the 'Build Own Operate (BOO)' method. JUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain presented there.

According to the signed agreement, the company will generate about 1 megawatt of electricity daily by installing solar panels on the roofs of various buildings of the university.  As a result of this agreement, JUST will be able to purchase electricity at a saving of 26.6 percent compared to the conventional price.  Through this, the university is included in the scope of green energy as a part of protecting the environment and the green economy.

The agreement between the two organizations was mediated by the University's Executive Engineer (Electricity) Eng. Md. Mizanur Rahman.  He said, currently the electricity demand in our university is about 1 MW and the capacity is 3650 KVA.  After the opening of all buildings of the university, the electricity demand will increase to about 2 thousand kilowatts or 2 megawatts.  About 26.6 percent of money will be saved after installing solar panels.  The rooftop solar system will be installed on an area of about 1.5 lakh square feet.  In this, the university will also get rent at the rate of Tk 2 per square feet per month.

Regarding the signing of the contract, Chief Operating Officer of Superstar Renewable Energy Limited, Engineer Mizanur Rahman said, this renewable energy will supply sufficient amount of electricity according to the needs of the university.

Besides, after meeting the university's electricity demand, the excess electricity generated will also be supplied to the national grid.

JUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr.  Md. Anwar Hossain welcomed the agreement and said that, he accepted the plan to bring JUST under green energy.

“JUST is the first among the universities in the country to make such an agreement after a long effort.  It will meet the electricity needs of the university at an affordable price, and on the other hand will play an important role in protecting the environment.” He added.
