Hang in there
As the air around us gets toxic, greenery has become a must-follow home décor practice. From the #jungalow trend to terrace and vertical gardens, indoor air-cleaning plants or herb gardens – giving plants a home is as much a necessity as a decorative need. This summer, add more dimension to your home greenspace with a throwback trend – hanging plants. It’s about using greenery in places where you would least expect. Think façades, patios, windows, or even your bathrooms and kitchens.
Basket Case
Plants in baskets are the micro-trend fuelled by a budding (ahem!) tribe of Instagram plant influencers aka plantfluencers. Horticultural expert and plantfluencer Harpreet Ahluwalia designs inner spaces that are customised to interesting planters. The idea: to create urban jungles in homes and offices, as he says that plants make people happier. He adds, “There are great physical and mental benefits of living with plants. And currently there’s a revolution in container and hanging-plants gardening.” In fact, hanging plants act as mood creators and space savers for home and offices too.
Plantfluencers Komal Garg and Angud Bhalla promote the ‘Breathe’ décor in their posts. It is all about designing spaces with a clear green aesthetic. They believe that there’s no space too small for plants – from a corner to a window to a shower cubicle, everything can be converted into a garden.

Hang Outs
If you are looking for hanging plant décor, go for perennials like lipstick plant, mistletoe cactus or African milk barrel for your balcony or patio. The perfect plant for hanging indoors is string-of-pearls. The hanging plants help to cool your home and add vibrancy to areas where standard potted blossoms might not be optimal. They are low maintenance, and you can also use recycled material like old bottles and cans.
Before you hang your pots and style your plants, consider how you are going to water them, as watering a dangling plant is not easy. Make sure the planter has the right drainage inside another pot to contain drips and leaks. Pick the low-maintenance variety that can go a few weeks without watering and grow easily. It’s time for a new kind of hang out.
