Fairuz Sadaf Abontika, a Jagannath University (JnU) student who tragically committed suicide on March 15, placed second in the merit list of LLB Hon’s exam with a CGPA of 3.65 out of 4.00.
The Department of Law published the results of the eighth and final semester of the LLB Hon's on Sunday.
She achieved an impressive 3.73 GPA and secured third place on the merit list for the eighth semester, excelling in various courses. Abontika was admitted to the Department of Law in the 2017-18 academic year.
The Dean and Chairman of the Department of Law, Dr S M Masum Billah, told the Daily Bangladesh Post that “she secured a super impressive second position based on the results of all the semesters. The results showcase a high threshold in terms of academic excellence.
I am, as her teacher, emotionally overwhelmed not to bring her back to life. She could be a quality teacher or an attorney.” Notably, in the eighth semester, she scored 3.75 in Special Penal Law, 3.50 in Law of Criminal Procedure, 3.50 in Conveyancing, Drafting, and Trial Advocacy Training, 3.75 in Legal Research and Writing, and a perfect 4.00 in both Liberation Movement and Independent Course, along with the oral exam.
The tragedy took a darker turn when, on March 15, Fairuz Abontika hanged herself at her Cumilla residence after accusing her classmate Amman and the assistant proctor of the university in a Facebook post around 10 pm on March 15.
Following the grim event, a case was filed with the Kotwali Police Station, charging individuals with incitement to suicide.
On May 8, teacher Deen Islam was released from Cumilla Central Jail on bond after being identified by Jagannath University (JnU) student Abontika as one of two people accountable for her death prior to her suicide.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Feroz Hossain of the Kotwali Police Station in Comilla stated that the High Court's order resulted in the teacher Deen Islam's release on bail.
The other accused in the case, Fairuz's classmate Amman Siddique is still in jail.
Dean Dr S M Masum Billah also a member of the investigation committee formed by the university authority, he confirms that they are very much sensible over the issue and carefully preparing their report on this regard.
He assures “Soon, we will be able to submit the report.” Prior to taking her own life on March 15, Fairuz Abontika claimed that Assistant Proctor Din Islam and her classmate Amman Siddique were to blame in a Facebook post.
“If I ever die by suicide, my classmate Amman Siddique and Assistant Proctor Din Islam, who supported him, will be solely responsible for my death.
I complained to the proctor's office that Amman was threatening me offline and also online but I did not get any benefit. Deen Islam scares me in many ways for the sake of Amman.
He said that expelling me is very easy for him. I know I will not get any justice here,” she wrote.
