We are gravely concerned over the unchecked incidents of snatching in the capital and its adjoining areas in recent times. A feeling of insecurity has already gripped the city people as they may fall prey to the armed muggers anytime. The armed muggers equipped with fire arms and sharp weapons are roaming and looting valuable things including money, cell phone sets, laptop, handbags and ornaments from the helpless victims almost every day.
Many people were stabbed to death by the gangs of muggers in the capital city in the past. Reportedly, at least nine people who were stabbed by various gangs of muggers and got serious wounds, received treatment from different hospitals and clinics in the city recently. However, police do not have any accurate statistics of how many snatching incidents occur in the city per day or month as most victims are reluctant to file complaints with police stations to avert possible hassles. As a result, a large number of the incidents of mugging do not come to the attention of the police.
The government should take necessary
initiatives to destroy the network of muggers
The muggers usually prey on rickshaw passengers at dawn and after the dusk using microbus and private car. These organised criminals haunt the passengers of CNG auto-rickshaw by cutting the backside of CNG-driven auto-rickshaw since dusk to till midnight. Besides, the muggers snatch mobile phone sets from the passengers seated beside the windows of buses during traffic signals at various intersections.

When a bus starts moving on from one stoppage to another, the muggers also start running and suddenly snatch cell phone sets from the passengers sitting beside open window. The same grime scenario is prevailing in the city’s most strategic points except some residential and official areas of VVIP and VIP.
Not only in the capital, there are also hotspots of Gazipur, Savar and Narayanganj where mugging incidents are taking places every day. Besides, mugging in other major cities, including Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet is also showing an upward trend for the last few days.
Therefore, the law enforcement agencies must intensify police patrolling, increase check posts and devise static security measures in the capital immediately, especially at various strategic points to avert any unpleasant incident including mugging. Also, the government should take necessary initiatives to destroy the network of muggers.
