Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus referred to the students' victory in the most recent protests as Bangladesh's "second independence" in a historic statement that was released in the wake of Sheikh Hasina's resignation and removal from office.
Speaking in an interview with an Indian mrdia ‘The Print’ on Monday afternoon, Dr Yunus celebrated what he sees as a historic turning point for the nation.
Dr Yunus praised the student movement, asserting that the resignation of Sheikh Hasina marked a significant shift away from what he termed a dictatorial regime.
“We were like an occupied country under a regime that controlled everything,” Yunus said. “Now, the people of Bangladesh are truly independent. This is our second independence, and the entire nation is rejoicing.”
The economist expressed optimism about the future, highlighting a collective desire to rebuild and create a better country. “We feel joy now. We have many challenges ahead, but we are committed to starting anew,” he added.
Dr Yunus also mentioned that he plans to return to Bangladesh soon and continue his work independently, free from the personal attacks he faced during Hasina's tenure.
