Stakeholder consultation for Artemia4Bangladesh held in Cox’s Bazar

The stakeholder consultation meeting of the Artemia4Bangladesh project was held at the Long Beach Hotel in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday with the support of the European Union, WorldFish Bangladesh organized the event.

Syed Md Alamgir, Deputy Director (Admin), Department of Fisheries, presided over the meeting while Dario Trombetta, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, was the chief guest.

Among others, Ms. Laura Chechi, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh; Ms. Shabnam Ishrat, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, Zafarul Iqbal Bhuiyan, Deputy General Manager of BSCIC Cox’s Bazar; SM Khalekuzzaman, Fisheries Officer of Cox’s Bazar District; and Shahidul Alam, Joint Secretary of the Shrimp Hatcheries Association of Bangladesh, also presented at the meeting.

Dr Meezanur Rahman, Technical Team Leader, presented the progress of the project. He said, "Artemia are now used as live feed for shrimp/fish species and Artemia Brine Shrimp Kabab has been tasted as a human food at the field level as well as among the stakeholders, partners, and fisheries department."

Dario Trombetta, from the Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, said, "Artemia farming will emerge as an innovation towards green transition and climate-smart alternative livelihood option for salt farmers." 

Syed Md Alamgir, Deputy Director (Admin), Department of Fisheries, has expressed full support for the Artemia4Bangladesh project. He added that Artemia would be an asset to Bangladesh and its economy. He said that farmers needed to sustain the project. Since Artemia is a high-protein food, it needs to be utilized.

Artemia farmer, fish producer, and hatchery owner took part in the event.

Also Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh team visited in the integrated salt-Artemia ponds on 17 May 2022 and they were pleased in their field visit.
