The government has undertaken a special project worth Tk 1,696 crore for ensuring education and improving standard of life of the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (Rohingya) and children and local community.
The World Bank (WB), one of the development partners of Bangladesh, will provide grant worth $200 million (almost Tk 1,653.6 crore) for the project. The rest of the money, Tk 42.4 crore, would be spent from the government’s fund.
Abdul Baki, additional secretary and wing chief of the Economic Relations Division (ERD), said, “The World Bank has already confirmed verbally about the assistance. The WB will provide $200 million under the project to improve education and quality of life of the Rohingya people and local communities.”
“The project proposal is now in the final stages. The agreement will be reached soon after we get the project approved by the ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council),” he mentioned.
The project is being prepared by the Department of Primary and Mass Education. According to sources, the project will be implemented in Cox's Bazar and the larger host community.

Under the project, the grants will be spent on development of basic skills, social norms, personal safety and hygiene practices of the children, adolescents and young people from the forcibly displaced Myanmar Nationals and the wider host community, a senior official of the Department of Primary Education said.
“Besides, the management of post-Covid-19 schools, training centers, education centers and strong immune system for students will be built,” he mentioned.
A PDPP (Pre-Development Project Proposal) summary of the project has been sent to the Planning Commission for the purpose of obtaining a grant aid from the World Bank in favour of the project.
Sohel Ahmed, Additional Director General of the Department of Primary Education, said that the project is being taken up for the Rohingya community and local community with the grant of the World Bank.
