Soumitra Chatterjee hospitalised

Veteran Bangla cinema actor Soumitra Chatterjee was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday after he complained of breathing problems and doctors said he was out of danger.

Chatterjee, 84, was admitted to the Intensive Coronary Unit of the hospital at around 9.30 am with respiratory tract infection, a statement issued by the south Kolkata hospital said.

“Our doctors are monitoring him. At the moment, Mr Chatterjee is out of danger and we are keeping a close watch on him, a hospital source said.

"He is being treated in ICU under close supervision," the statement said. Initial tests said Chatterjee was suffering from age-related health issues such as potassium and sodium imbalance.

The actor's daughter Poulami Basu said his father’s condition was stable. "There is no threat to his life," she added.

Chatterjee, who has six decades of illustrious film career, had attended shootings till Monday, apart from other, industry sources said.

The actor, one of most favourites of auteur director Satyajit Ray, was bestowed with the Legion of Honour by the French government in 2018, and Dadasaheb Phalke award, Indian government’s highest cinematic honour,  in 2011.
