Soil cutting from cropland threatens Sharsha environment

Season of brick making has started early  this year. Meanwhile, soil has been ended at the many brick kilns. Nobody is giving attention as many people taking soil from cropland to brick kilns.

Many are using excavator machine to take soil from crop lands. According to Agriculture Department, the croplands are missing its fertility as top level soil is taking away, as a result we have to face food scarcity. 

Moreover, cropsland are losing its fertility and biodervisity. In the rainy season, ropa aman and Irri-boro paddy has been cultivated throughout the year. Various tasty fishes have been found in the low lying water area. Fishermen live on fishing in this area. However, environment is going to destroy for the aggressive mentality of the owner of brick kilns. 

According to Sharsha upazila Agriculture Office, there are more than 27,611 hectare area of arable land at the 11 union of the upazila. 

Farmers used to cultivate various types of crops on that land throughout the year. As agri equipment have been raised and farmers are not getting proper prices of their products, they are selling soil at a price of Tk 500 to Tk 600 per tractor. In fact, they are getting Tk 40, 000 from per bigha by selling soil from their land.

South Buruj garden, Gatipara, SommondhoKathi, Shyamlagachi, Nijampur, Kagojpur, Matipukur, Lautara, Sharsha, Ulahi, Goga of the upazila, soil from cropland has been sent to brick kiln. 

Owners of the brick kilns said, soil from river and abandoned places have been used in brick kiln. However, the amount of soil is more in the river soil. So that, we use few crop land's soil with this to get better production of bricks. 

Assistant agriculture officer of Sharsha upazila Amol Krishno said, as soil is cutting of top level of crop land, the level of Gypsum is destroying. Moreover, diversity strength of crop lands are decreasing as a result these lands will face long losses. 

UNO of Sharsha Upazila, Pulok Kumer Mandol said we didn’t get any complaints of cutting crops land. If we get particular complaints, we will take necessary action.
