Sohrab Hossain Khan Suroddin, chairman of Manoharpur union parishad in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga, has been selling soil in a brick kiln in the name of digging a pond, ignoring government policy. The local government has fined him Tk 15,000 under the Union parishad act for this crime.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Mohiuddin conducted a drive at around 12pm on Sunday. At that time, sensing the presence of the mobile court, the workers fled from the spot leaving the excavator. The mobile court seized two tractors loaded with soil including an excavator from the spot. A team of Jibannagar police fully cooperated with the mobile court during the drive.

According to the mobile court and local sources, Sohrab Hossain Khan, son of late Golam Hossain of Dhopakhali village in Jibannagar upazila and current chairman of Manoharpur Union parishad, was lifting soil with excavator in the name of digging a pond in the field of Paschim Para Beel of Dhopakhali village by exercising power without any government permission. And that excavated soil was being sold in a nearby brick kiln.

Every day from morning to evening, 10-12 tractors loaded with soil used to move through the village at a reckless speed. The villagers lodged a written complaint against Sohrab Hossain at the Jibannagar UNO office to stop the illegal soil lifting. Based on the complaints of the villagers Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Mohiuddin conducted the drive on Sunday afternoon.
