Chattogram Port is in the grip of container congestion due to non-delivery of goods by importers. 9,000 TEUs containers were stored in the port yard from May 1 to May 19. Earlier, about 35,000 TEUs containers were stored in the port yard. Now there are about 44,000 containers in different yards. Where the port capacity of Chattogram port is 49 thousand TEUs containers. The port authorities said that the container was tangled as the amount of unloading by the importers was less than that of unloading the goods from the ship.
The port authorities say that even though the importers have released the goods, it is much less than before. Container congregation is being created in the yard as the amount of container unloading is less as opposed to unloading the container from the ship. If the importers do not deliver the goods quickly, there is a danger of shipwreck with container congestion.
According to Chattogram Port sources, Chattogram Port has the capacity to hold 49,000 TEUS containers in different yards. However, 44,000 containers have already been stored in the yard. Where normally 7,000 TEUs containers of goods were unloaded per day, the volume has now dropped to an average of 2,000 TEUs containers. 3,300 containers of goods were discounted, but since then, the amount of discount has started gradually decreasing on April 30. More than 4,000 TEUs container goods have been released on May 1-10.
Meanwhile, more than 60 ships are anchored outside the port of Chattogram. About 20 of these ships contain imported raw materials from garment factories. The rest contains cement, sugar, oil.
The port authorities say that such a situation would not have arisen if the port users had unloaded the goods in time. Most containers contain a variety of factory products, including clothing.
BGMEA says that the goods are being released from the port only for the needs of the factory. The product will be released within a week and taken to the factory warehouse.
Syed Nazrul Islam, first vice-president of BGMEA, said the factories have been open since this week. Factory owners are discounting products according to their needs. In a few days, the level of product discount will increase further. Because the pace of work in factories is increasing. We hope that the goods will be released from the port within the next one week.
Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Omar Faruq said, we are aware enough. But port users need to be more sincere. There is no possibility of container or shipping congestion if the amount of goods of importers from the port increases. We are now urging port users to discount their products. We hope they will cooperate with us.
