A six-year-old coronavirus patient died early Monday at Chattogram General Hospital in the port city. However, it is not clear yet how the child was infected with the virus. On the other hand, a police barrack in the police line of Chattogram Metropolitan Polic (CMP) has been locked down after a traffic constable was tested positive of COVID-19, and a total of 225 cops, doctors, nurses and health workers have been sent to home quarantine.
Dr. Ashim Kumar Nath, Superintendent of Chattogram General Hospital, told media that the patient was brought to the hospital with critical condition from Patiya Upazila of the district in a terminal stage at 2:10am on Sunday night. “The patient had severe respiratory complications. Later, the patient died at 3:10am (on the same night),” said Dr Ashim.
Previously on Sunday, the patient was diagnosed with COVID-19 after his samples were tested at Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID). Meanwhile, Patiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Farhana Jahan Upama said the parents of the deceased child did not have any symptom of corona infection, so it is not clear how the child was infected.
After the death of the child due to coronavirus infection, some areas of Patiya upazila have been locked down, she said. So far, a total of 14 persons including a woman have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Chattogram. Of whom, two people, including this child, have died in Chittagong till now.
Of them, a 69-year old man from Satkhania upzilla died of COVID-19 at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on April 9, making it the first death with coronavirus in Chattogram. A traffic constable, 55, who was undergoing treatment at the Divisional Police Hospital for five days, has been shifted to General Hospital, a specialized hospital for COVID-19 infection, after he was found positive from a Corona test, CMP sources said.
Additional deputy commissioner Abu Bakar Siddqiue said, "Some 225 people including 200 cops who had come to close contact to the infected constable were sent to home-quarantine.” Three doctors, three nurses, seven medical assistants of the departmental police hospital, 12 roommates and 200 policemen from the barracks have been sent to home quarantine.
All CMP unit members, including policemen working in the field at the police station, have been advised to exercise caution. On April 3, a 67-year-old man was tested positive, making it the first confirmed case in the port city. Yesterday (Monday) local law enforcers arrested a man for selling open market sale (OMS) rice at a grocery store in Chaitanya Hat area of Durgapur union of Mirsarai upzilla.
