A Kurigram court awarded death sentence to six people for killing four members of a family at Bhuruingamari upazila of Kurigram in 2014. A close relative of the deceased was also convicted in the case.
Judge of Kurigram District and Sessions Judge Court Md Abdul Mannan delivered the verdict on Tuesday. The court, however, acquitted another accused as charges brought against him was not proved.
Of the seven accused of the case, one had been on the run since the murder, three were in jail and the remaining three were on bail.
The convicts are elder brother to one of the victim Mamtaz Uddin, Nazurul Islam Majnu alias Manju, Amir Hamza alias Amir Hossain, Zakir Hossain alias Russell Khan, Jalal Gazi alias Palash Gazi and Hasmat Ali Sheikh. Nainul Islam was acquitted from the charge.
On the morning of January 15, 2014, the mutilated bodies of Sultan Mandal, his granddaughters Romana and Anika was found in the bedroom of their house in Diadanga village in Bhurungamari upazila. Sultan’s wife Hajera Begum later died at the hospital. They were hacked to death.
Hafizur Rahman, son of the deceased, filed a case with Bhurungamari Police Station accusing some unidentified people. The court passed the verdict after Mamtaz, the brother of slain Sultan, admitted that he had killed them at night with the help of hired killers.
