Winter vegetable fields have been devastated by cyclone Sitrang, and the effects are now being felt in the local market.
Prices of many commodities including for winter vegetables have gone up. Egg, sugar, fish, meat, rice and almost everything are dearer.
Cyclone Sitrang has damaged 6,000 hectares of crops, according to the government.
Gourds are being sold at Tk 60 to Tk 70 per kilogram (kg), cabbages, cauliflower are available at Tk 50 a piece, tomatoes at Tk 140 per kg, beans at Tk 100 per kg, yardlong beans at Tk 80 per kg, Chilli Tk 80 to Tk 100 per kg, sweet pumpkin Tk 50 taka per kg, pointed gourd at Tk 50, brinjal at Tk 60 to Tk 70 per kg, bitter gourd at Tk 80 per kg, radish Tk 70 per kg, cucumber Tk 100 per kg, luffa at Tk 60 per kg, with papaya being the only one available under Tk 50, being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg.
Traders said that many vegetable fields have been destroyed in the cyclone. As a result, the supply of winter vegetables is slightly less in the market. This is why the price is high.
Besides, the traders promised to sell open and packaged sugar in the market at the price set by the government from this week. But it is still not possible, and as a result, they have not kept this essential in their respective shops.
Broiler chicken eggs are being sold at Tk 145 per dozen, duck eggs at Tk 210 and local chicken eggs at Tk 230 per dozen. Broiler chicken is selling at Tk 170 to Tk 180 per kg, sonali chicken at Tk 320, local chicken at Tk 530 to Tk 550 per kg.
On the other hand, beef is selling at Tk 700 and mutton is selling at Tk 900 per kg.
The price of rice in the market is also stable. Looking around the rice market, miniket variety of rice was selling at Tk 73 to Tk 75 per kg, Atash Tk 55 to Tk 58 per kg, Nazirshail Tk 83 to Tk 91 per kg, coarse rice Tk 48 to Tk 55 kg, Attash Tk 48 to Tk 55.
A salesman said that the rice market was somewhat unstable at the beginning of this month. But now the price is not fluctuating like before. Aman crop has been damaged due to Sitrang. It is not possible to tell how the rice market will be in the coming days.
