The sit-in strike in Bandarban demanding the removal of the allegedly corrupt Chairman and Members of Bandarban Hill District Council that lasted for three days ended on Thursday.
The sit-in strike came to an end with the intervention of Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Shah Mojahid Uddin. The District Council returned to its regular activities as a result.
Local sources said the anti-discriminatory protestors held a sit-in strike under the banner of civil society from August 12 with the demand of removing the Chairman and Members of Bandabar Hill District Council. The officers and staff of the office could not resume their regular activities due to that and all the works of the office, which is one of the main offices in the district, were halted as a result.
It was alleged that Chairman K Shai Hla and Members of the District Council were signing government files without coming to the office to legalize the misdeeds and corrupted works they conducted for the last 15 years, including discriminatory hiring, embezzling government funds by creating fake projects etc. Bandarban civil society held a sit-in strike from the morning of August 12 with the demand of stopping the signing of these files and appointing new chairman and members by removing the present corrupted Chairman and members of the District Council.
Chairman of Chattogram Hill Tract Citizens Parishad, Kazi Md Mojibor Rahman, said on behalf of the civil society that the Deputy Commissioner is a representative of Bangladesh Government and they have withdrawn their sit-in strike with his assurance.
Deputy Commissioner Shah Mozahid Uddin said they investigated the sit-in strike and promptly sent a report to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs to inform the advisors and the secretaries of the ministry. They have sent their assurance regarding the matter. He also said that decision will come to change Bandarban Hill District Council very soon.
