A Dhaka court on Monday ordered Kaushik Hossain Taposh, singer, composer, and chairman of Gaan Bangla TV, to be sent to jail after showing him arrested in a case related to the attempted murder of trader Ishtiaque Mahmud during the quota reform movement on July 18 in front of Azampur Habibullah High School.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman issued the order after Investigation Officer Md Mohibullah, a sub-inspector from Uttara East Police Station, presented Taposh in court along with a request for a seven-day remand.
The magistrate scheduled a hearing for the remand request on November 6, instructing the sub-inspector to produce Taposh in court on that date.
Prior to this, the police filed an application to formally arrest Taposh in the case.
In the remand request, the investigating officer stated that Taposh had knowledge of the violence and the attempted murder of Ishtiaque and that his remand was necessary to gather key information about the incident. However, the defense filed an application asserting that Taposh was falsely implicated.
According to the case details, it was alleged that Ishtiaque had joined the quota reform movement on July 18 near Azampur Habibullah High School, where he was shot and later treated at Evercare Hospital. On September 29, Ishtiaque filed a case with Uttara East Police Station against 126 people, including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.
Taposh was arrested by police early on Monday in the Uttara area of the capital.
