Singapore keen to build Bay-terminal

Envoy visits Chittagong Chamber

Sheila Pillai, Charge of the Affairs of the Singapore High Commission, said that geographically, Singapore has similarities with the port city Chittagong.  Chittagong Port has a relationship with Singapore as a transshipment port.

 An 11-member business delegation headed by Sheila Pillai, Singapore's Charge d'Affaires appointed to Bangladesh, had an exchange of views with Omar Hazzaz, president of The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Chamber office at the World Trade Center on Tuesday.

Charge the Affairs Sheela Pillai said, Chittagong has achieved many infrastructural developments which are very positive for economic prosperity.  A master plan has been formulated for the construction of Bay Terminal as an extension of Chittagong Port.  Singaporean companies are interested in working in it.Chamber President Omar Hazzaz said, Chittagong is going to become an ideal destination for investment through significant infrastructure development under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister.  

He called for investments in blue-economy, tourism, health, education and infrastructure sectors in Chittagong by utilizing the facilities provided by the Bangladesh government for all these infrastructure and foreign investments.

Matarbari requested the expertise and technical cooperation of Singapore's logistics sector in various areas, including deep sea ports. 

He called for the import of various outsourcing and IT services required in the business sector from Bangladesh.  Besides, he requested to come forward jointly in the related fields to make Chittagong a modern and planned city like Singapore.

 Business leaders said that Singaporean investors are conducting business in the logistics sector of about 40 countries including Bangladesh.  

He commented that more investment will increase in the shipping sector if the deep sea port and bay-terminal projects of Bangladesh are implemented.  They emphasized on removing various complications in increasing investment in Bangladesh's shipping and logistics sector.

 Chamber Director Mahfuzul Haque Shah along with representatives of High Commission and Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore and representatives of Enterprise Singapore and PSA were present.
