Ganatantro Mukti Dibash (Free Democracy Day) was observed in the country on Monday marking the fall of the then autocratic ruler HM Ershad in 1990. On this auspicious occasion, let us unite our efforts to scale up our commitment to give the country’s democracy an institutional shape.

The 6th December is a significant day in the history of restoring democracy as on this day in 1990, the fall of the autocratic government took place. In the face of movement, autocratic ruler General HM Ershad had to step down on December 6 in 1990.

Earlier on November 10 in 1987, Awami Jubo League leader Nur Hossain, who imprinted his bare chest and back with the slogans “Free democracy” and “Down with autocracy”, embraced martyrdom in police firing during an anti-autocracy demonstration in city. The martyrdom of Nur Hossain and others during the mass upsurge of late 90s expedited the anti-autocracy movement.

Apart from all political parties, country’s people, irrespective of religion, caste and creed continued to take part in anti-autocracy movement to restore the country’s democracy. Later the supreme sacrifice of Dr Milon transformed the anti-autocracy movement into a mass upsurge that prompted the fall of the then autocratic regime paving the way for restoration of democracy in the country.

After the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 in 1975, Ziaur Rahman violated the Constitution and grabbed the state power illegally as a military dictator and formed Bangladesh Nationalist Party. After Zia, HM Ershad, another military dictator ousted Abdus Sattar, assumed power in 1982 and formed Jatiya Party following his footprint and played the same game like him (Ziaur Rahman). And he continued his autocracy rule up to 1990.

Since then a reign of terror was established after destroying the country’s democracy and distorting the glorious history of the Liberation War. And the country’s people spearheaded a long campaign to restore democracy uprooting the autocratic regime to establish their fundamental rights and they spontaneously took part in the movement and shed their blood.

The political party which is born from the pockets of military usurpers can never understand the value of democracy and do well for the people. We think a political party formed by an illegal military dictator is illegal and it should not be continued in a democratic country.

No political party can exist without practising democracy. All political parties should pledge to give an institutional shape to democracy. We hope, our new generation will involve themselves in the democratic practice being imbued with the spirit of Liberation War as democracy and development are complementary to each other.
