Sidr Day was observed in Barguna on Saturday (November 15) in memory of those killed in the Super Cyclone Sidr.
On the occasion, Barguna district administration and the press club laid wreaths and offered prayers in memory of the victims at the mass grave memorial of the deceased at Gorjaniyagram in Naltona Union No. 10 of Barguna Sadar Upazila.
Barguna Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Mohammad Jalal Uddin on behalf of Barguna Deputy Commissioner Masuma Akter laid wreaths at the time. Later, Maulana Mohammad Abdul Mannan conducted the prayers while relatives of the victims were present.
In 2007, Cyclone Sidr swept through the coastal district of Barguna at a speed of 240 to 250 kmph, destroying everything along the coast and killing about 2,000 people. Thousands of cattle and houses were destroyed, Roads, agro-industries, trade, everything was in ruins.
As it was not possible to bury the victims of Sidr in separate graves due to unfortunate condition, 29 people were buried in the same grave. A Sidr monument was erected at Gorjanbunia village on the initiative of Barguna Press Club in memory of the victims.
