Shoriful Islam was precluded from participating in the IPL due to injury concerns, and subsequently, he incurred an injury during the latter stages of a warm-up match against India. This raised apprehensions that he might be unavailable for the World Cup's opening game.
Post-injury, Shoriful was promptly hospitalised. Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, the physician for the Bangladesh cricket team, conveyed through a video message that Shoriful had sustained a laceration between the index and middle fingers of his left hand. Following preliminary treatment on the field, he was admitted to Nassau University Medical Center upon the match's conclusion.
The BCB's medical professional also indicated that the timeline for Shoriful's return to play remains indeterminate. A hand surgeon administered six stitches to the affected area at that juncture.
Subsequently, Bayezidul Islam, another physiotherapist from the BCB, relayed disheartening news regarding Shoriful. He remarked, "Typically, such stitches heal within 7 to 10 days. The remainder is contingent upon the player's recovery rate. Clarity on his condition will emerge in the next three to four days. Some individuals recuperate expeditiously, yet the likelihood of his participation in the initial match is minimal."
In essence, Shoriful's involvement in the first match is veiled in uncertainty, hinging on his convalescence. Should he be deemed unfit, Hasan Mahmud, a member of the 15-player reserve squad, is poised to replace him.
Conversely, Bayezidul Islam imparted encouraging news about Taskin, the vice-captain. He reported that Taskin is anticipated to be match-ready from the outset, stating, "Taskin has demonstrated significant improvement. He had intended to practice bowling outdoors today, which is why he was present indoors. He is expected to commence full-scale bowling on June 5th. His availability for the match on June 7th will be ascertained thereafter. His progress thus far is commendable."
He further elucidated, "Taskin's prospects are promising, which justifies his inclusion in the World Cup squad. Injuries of this nature typically resolve within four weeks. While one cannot assert his complete fitness post-injury, he is likely to be in prime condition. It is hoped that he will attain full fitness by June 7th."
