Newly appointed International Crimes Tribunal chief prosecutor Tajul Islam on Monday said that the trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for July genocide would be aired live.
“The government will do everything to hold the trial in a transparent manner,” he told reporters at a briefing at the ICT in the capital.
The chief prosecutor hinted that the trial would begin soon.
He also said that the decision was taken at a high-level meeting.
Assistant Attorney General Mujahidul Islam Shahin told the Bangladesh Post that the trial might be aired live for ensuring transparency in the trial process.
“Different countries hold such kind of trial publicly,” he said.
Amid a mass upsurge, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India. She is now facing over 125 murder cases.
Tajul said that steps would be taken to bring back prime accused in most of the genocide cases to the country under the extradition treaty with India.
“The investigation team has yet not started the probe for Sheikh Hasina’s trial. Besides Sheikh Hasina, the trial process against those involved in the genocide, will also be started formally,” he said.
Tajul Islam added, “Attempts are being made to destroy the evidences of the genocide occurred in July. The important task for us is to collect the evidences and bring those into the legal framework to prove the case.”
The chief prosecutor also stated that judges for the tribunal will be appointed shortly.
He reassured that all accused, including Sheikh Hasina, will be treated equally, with no special privileges or exemptions.
