Bangladesh’s captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, extended a heartfelt apology on behalf of his squad following the Tigers' conclusion of their ICC T20 World Cup journey with a loss to Afghanistan in St. Vincent today.
The Tigers concluded the Super Eight phase without a single victory, succumbing to Australia, India, and Afghanistan. In the initial round, they triumphed over Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and Nepal, yet faltered against South Africa.
With a tally of three victories out of seven matches, this campaign marks Bangladesh's most successful venture in T20 World Cups to date. Nevertheless, having missed the chance to progress to the semifinals and exhibiting a rather uninspired batting performance throughout the tournament, the Bangladesh captain conveyed his regrets to the supporters.
"Reflecting on our entire World Cup endeavour, I must admit that as a team, we've fallen short of our fans' expectations. We've disappointed those who loyally support our matches. Thus, I extend an apology on behalf of my team," Shanto remarked post-match against Afghanistan.
"Our batting contingent failed to rise to the occasion, and for that, we are truly remorseful. Looking ahead, we endeavour to overcome this setback," he continued.
Rishad Hossain's exploits emerged as a beacon for Bangladesh in the tournament. The leg-spinner concluded the campaign with 14 wickets across seven matches, setting a record for a Bangladeshi bowler in T20 World Cups.
Shanto acknowledged that while Rishad and the other bowlers provided glimmers of hope for the Tigers, as a collective, Bangladesh did not meet the mark in the tournament.
"The bowlers performed admirably. Entering a competition of this calibre, Rishad consistently delivered in each game. There are several positives to draw from. Yet, our batting has let down our fans. We've caused distress to our compatriots.
"Nevertheless, I must emphasise that our efforts were unwavering. Each one of us committed wholeheartedly. Our endeavours were genuine. However, ultimately, we did not achieve our goals. Hence, I offer my apologies on behalf of the team."
