Global star Shakira has moved on from her split with footballer Gerard Piqué, but the pain remains. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the singer reflected on the emotional turmoil she endured during their breakup in 2022.
Shakira and Gerard Piqué met in 2010 and were together for over a decade. However, their relationship ended in 2022, and Shakira expressed her anguish through her 2023 breakup anthem, "Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53."
Discussing the split, Shakira described it as the darkest time of her life. "The suffering I felt was probably the greatest I had ever experienced, and it kept me from functioning at times. It felt like someone had stabbed a hole in my chest—a sensation so real it felt physical," she revealed.
Earlier, Shakira addressed her personal turmoil through music and in a 2023 interview with People en Español, where she mentioned Gerard's betrayal while her father was in the ICU recovering from a tragic fall. Gerard allegedly cheated on Shakira with his current girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti.
Reflecting on her journey, Shakira said, "The worst has happened, and this process woke up a new sense of autonomy and independence in me. My music was the way back to myself."
Shakira and Gerard have two sons, nine-year-old Milan and seven-year-old Sasha. In June 2022, they announced their separation in a joint statement, emphasising the need for privacy for the well-being of their children.
Last year, Gerard went Instagram-official with Clara Chia Marti. The two reportedly started dating while he was still with Shakira.
