The Shaheed Selim BUFT National Debate Competition 2024, organized by BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT), wrapped up on November 4. Held over three days, the competition attracted 64 college and university teams from across Bangladesh. The BUFT Debate Club hosted the event, which featured an exciting Final Round and a Closing Ceremony.
During the ceremony, a memorandum of understanding was signed to launch the Shafiuddin-Tasrifa Scholarship Fund. This new fund, created in honor of the parents of the BUFT Board of Trustees Chairman, received a Tk 50 lakh donation.
The event was graced by notable figures, including Mr. Faruque Hassan, Chairman of BUFT's Board of Trustees and Former President of BGMEA. Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change to Bangladesh’s Interim Government, served as the Chief Guest. Special Guests included Mr. Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, Mr. Salahuddin Ahmed, Mr. Feroz Hassan, Mrs. Sharmeen Hassan, and Mr. Md. Sultan Talukdar, father of Shaheed Md. Selim Talukdar.
In his welcome speech, BUFT Pro Vice Chancellor and Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan encouraged students to develop their critical thinking and leadership skills through debate.
Winners were awarded at both the university and college levels. Dhaka University took the university-level champion title, winning Tk 50,000, while Adamjee Cantonment College won the college-level title, also receiving Tk 50,000. First and second runners-up in the university category, Jahangirnagar University and North South University, received Tk 30,000 and Tk 20,000, respectively. College-level runners-up Noubahini College and Mirpur Cantonment Public School & College received similar prizes.
Five BUFT students were recognized for their achievements in the Textile Talent Hunt. Mr. Nafis Ahmed, Advisor of the BUFT Debate Club, gave the closing remarks. The event received support from Team Group, Posmi Sweaters Limited, Kaizer Knitwears Limited, M&J Group, and other sponsors.
