A total of seven shops were gutted by a fire at Thetrai bazar in Ulipur Upazila of Kurigram district on Friday.
It was learnt that the fire started from a hardware shop. The traders claimed there was loss of almost Tk 30 lac due to the fire incident.
The traders said the fire originated from a hardware shop. It spread to six other nearby shops in a short time. Later, members of Fire Service and Civil Defense arrived at the spot and took control of the fire with the help of the locals. There are two veterinary medicine and food shops, one hardware shop, one electronics shop, one hair salon, one tea stall and one fruit shop among the shops gutted by fire.
Among the traders who faced loss due to the incident, traders Sadekul Islam and Rashedul Islam said they suffered a loss of more than Tk 20 lakh in total. The traders also said they were doing business by taking loans from various banks and NGOs. They have become destitute because of the fire incident. They don’t know how they will pay the loan and bear their family expense now.
Station Officer of Ulipur Fire Service and Civil Defense Abbas Ali said primarily it was assumed that the fire might have been originated from the short circuit of electricity. However, the amount of loss will be known after investigation.
