A total of seven houses in Mirzaganj upazila of Patuakhali were destroyed on Thursday due to the Cyclone ‘Dana’ formed at the Bay of Bengal. Three people were also injured at that time.
The incident occurred at Deuli village in the upazila on Thursday noon. However, there were heavy rain accompanied by gusty wind since Wednesday night in the upazila.
Moreover, waterlogging has occurred in many areas of the upazila due to continuous rain. People of low income group, as well as working class people, became stranded at their home as a result. It was learnt that the houses of seven people including Selim Haoladar, Alamgir Siqdar, Karim Mia, Abul Mia, Zakir Mia and Sakir were completely destroyed as trees were uprooted due to the powerful gusty wind created by Cyclone Dana and fell over their houses. Locals said three people, including a woman named Rumi Begum, were seriously injured at that time. The injured are receiving treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.
Secretary of the union parishad Md Munsur Helal confirmed the matter.
When this correspondent spoke with the cyclone victims, they said along with the rain, a gusty wind started to blow suddenly. The fierce wind caused trees to fell over their houses, reducing their houses to ruble. They don’t know where they will live with their family now. Mirzaganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Tarikul Islam said a total of sixty shelters were prepared to face the cyclone. Dry foods were also arranged. The loss caused by the destruction of the houses will be assessed and measures will be taken to rehabilitate the families.
