Senior Secretary of the Industries Ministry Zakia Sultana on Wednesday said Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling in Bangladesh (SENSREC) project is playing a role in paving the way for executing 2009, the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) by June 26, 2025.
"Hong Kong Convention has been ratified by Bangladesh on 14 June 2023. It will come into effect from 26 June 2025. Despite facing some challenges, the progress of Bangladesh in ratifying and upholding the Hong Kong Convention is a matter of great pride for us," she said.
Zakia said this while speaking as the chief guest at the "Workshop and Knowledge Management on Hong Kong International Convention" at a hotel in the city, said a press release.
Industries Ministry and International Maritime Organization (IMO) jointly organised the workshop under the SENSREC Project Phase-111. Zakia said SENSREC project is playing an important role in responsible ship recycling practices.
By working closely with the Ministry of Industries and the Bangladesh Ship Breakers and Recyclers Association, she said, the SENSREC project has mobilized stakeholders in the sustainable ship recycling industry in the country.
Norway's Ambassador to Bangladesh Espen Rikter-Svendsen and Project Coordinator of the IMO Department of Partnership and Project John Alonso spoke on the occasion as special guests while Additional Secretary of the Industries Ministry Md Shamimul Haque presided over it.
