On Thursday, February 29, 2024, Dhaka University's Linguistics Department organized a day-long seminar titled ‘ Samakale Bangladeshe Bhasa Chorcha’ at the RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium, marking the International Mother Tongue Day. The event was inaugurated by the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal, who graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Presided over by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, the opening ceremony witnessed insightful speeches from distinguished figures including Linguistics Department Chairman, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Asaduzzaman, and the convener of the seminar, Professor Dr. Syed Shahriar Rahman. Highlighting the significance of language preservation, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal underscored the economic implications of language loss, emphasizing the importance of nurturing one's mother tongue alongside economic development.
Professor Kamal stressed the need for concerted efforts towards the preservation of endangered languages through measures such as digitization, the formulation of language policies, and increased internationalization. He called upon educators, researchers, and stakeholders to collaborate in promoting and practicing mother tongues.
The seminar, which comprised three sessions, attracted linguists, scholars, and students from various departments, reflecting its significance both nationally and internationally. Participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions and presentations aimed at advancing language practices in contemporary Bangladesh.
