Mahbub Uddin Khokon, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), has strongly urged authorities to avoid declaring a state of emergency in Bangladesh.
In a press conference held on Tuesday at the SCBA auditorium, Khokon emphasised widespread public and student opposition to any emergency measures, recalling past administrations under Moeen U Ahmed and Fakhruddin Ahmed as unfavourable precedents.
He warned that any attempt to impose a state of emergency would face severe backlash and protests from the public.
Khokon, who also holds the position of joint secretary general of the BNP, used the opportunity to address broader issues within the country's judicial and administrative systems.
He demanded the immediate resignation of Supreme Court judges from both the Appellate and High Court Divisions, accusing them of political interference and corruption, which he claimed violated their judicial oaths.
In addition, Khokon called for the resignation of several key figures appointed by the Sheikh Hasina-led government, including Attorney General Amin Uddin, as well as the heads of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
His demands reflect ongoing dissatisfaction with the current administration and a push for significant reforms within the judicial and legal frameworks of Bangladesh.
