The Supreme Court has commuted the death penalty of five convicts to lifetime imprisonment over the murder of three siblings at Charia village under Hathazari upazila in Chattogram in 2003.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has, however, upheld the lifetime imprisonment of three out the eight convicts in the sensational triple murder case. So, a total of eight people get lifetime imprisonment in the verdict pronounced by the Supreme Court.
A five-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain reduced the death sentence on Tuesday (October 26) on hearing an appeal. The apex court pronounced the verdict, scarping the High Court verdict over the murder case.

Advocate Ashraf Uz Zaman Khan and Advocate Shirin Afroz moved in the court for the convicts, while Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state.
Three brothers named Abul Bashar, Abul Kashem and Badshah Alam were killed at a tea stall in daylight on May 26 in 2003 by the miscreants over land dispute.
Kazi Mofzal Master, brother of the deceased, filed a case against 22 people with Hathazari police station. An accused died during the trial in this case.
A Chattogram court on December 18 in 2004 sentenced five people to death and eight others to life term imprisonment in connection with the triple-murder case.
The High Court acquitted all the accused. Later, the state filed the appeal, challenging the High Court verdict.
