Illegal structures, hatcheries and dumping waste on Cox's Bazar sea beach are reportedly polluting the longest and unbroken seaboard of the world.
Different platforms have been calling upon the authorities concerned to take steps to save the beach from pollution and encroachment.
Two of the platforms reiterated the demand freshly on Saturday. District unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad and Cox’s Bazar Nagorik Forum jointly arranged a mass signature collection programme to raise the demand as well as demanding protection of Cox's Bazar sea beach from grabbing.
The programme was held on Cox's Bazar Central Shaheed Minar premises with this slogan ‘Save Cox's Bazar; Save Beach’.
Freedom Fighter Nurul Absar, Awami League leader Mahabubul Haque Makul, educationist Nasir Uddin, convener of Citizens Forum Helal Uddin and others spoke at the programme. Aware citizens, members of various educational institutions, leaders of socio-cultural and professional organizations attended the event and signed a petition demanding protection of the world's longest beach.
Recently various influential people started taking possession of the beach. As part of protesting this grabbing of the beach, locals launched this mass signature collecting initiative.
Convener of the Cox’s Bazar Nagorik Forum Helal Uddin said these signatures would be sent to the Prime Minister later.
Leaders of the Muktijoddha Sangsad and Cox’s Bazar Nagorik Forum said that they would continue movement in this regard. They said that the higher court had issued rule to protect Cox’s Bazar sea beach from pollution and encroachment.
The authorities concerned must take initiative to save the longest sea beach of the world, they added.
