Savar, Dhamrai people unhappy with volunteers

People of Savar and Dhamrai areas in Dhaka district have become fed up with some so-called volunteers for their misbehaviour during the crisis moment following the coronavirus spread.

The so-called volunteers indiscriminately beat up people, unethically block road and continue misdeeds in many other ways in the name of raising awareness among mass people for the last few days during the nationwide shutdown.

Even emergency services are also being disrupted due to role of the so-called volunteers, alleged some people of Savar and Dhamrai.

Meanwhile, the local administration yet to take any action in this connection despite unexpected incidents happen during this time. Many local journalists alleged that even they couldn't contact the Savar upazila administration as UNO’s mobile number remain switched off or he doesn’t not receive call.

When contacted, Maruf Hossain Sarder, Superintendent of Dhaka district police, told The Bangladesh Post, “We are failing to keep people indoor. Everybody should be aware of this situation.”

When asked, many people including RMG workers alleged that they were assaulted by so-called volunteers as well as some people forcefully blocking the road. SP said that if anybody files written complaint, then police would take necessary action.

Visiting several areas of Savar and Dhamrai, it was seen that many youths were walking around in groups with sticks, hockey sticks, Iron rods and most of them were are not matured.

Many people of Savar and Ashulia areas said that the government allow people to go out in an emergency but volunteers assault people. If the administration fails to control the so-called volunteers as well as the terrorists, then the administration should hand over the country to those volunteers to operate.

Md Kaiyum, a volunteer of Hemayetpur area of Savar, told The Bangladesh Post that Fakhrul Alam Samar, Chairman of Tetuljhora Union Parishad, appointed them and they are working to raise awareness among people. :We are also distributing safety products like soap, hand sanitizer and face mask,” he said. When asked about their  misbehaviour, the volunteer denied the allegation.

On other hand, KM Mintu, Organizing secretary of Garment Sramik Trade Union Kendra alleged that many RMG workers of Savar and Ashulia areas were beaten up by the volunteers. “They do not look like volunteer, rather they look like hijacker,” he said.

Seeking anonymity, a resident of Bank Town area of Savar alleged that some local influential blocked the main road of the area by using bamboo on Saturday morning. Many residents suffer, even they could not go out for emergencies like to buy essentials for home.

He also said that if anybody protest against them then it would be difficult for his to live in that area. Meanwhile this correspondent could not reach UNO of Savar and assistant commissioner (Land) despite making several phone calls.

However, Samiul Haque, UNO of Dhamrai, said, “We did not block any road in Dhamrai. If anybody blocks the road without permission then we will take legal action against them.”
