Sample harvesting of BRI-86 paddy in Ishwardi

Sample grains of new variety BRI-86 rice paddy have been harvested. On Thursday afternoon, a sample of paddy was harvested in a farmer's field in Goalbathan area of Muladuli union in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna.

Ishwardi Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Latif inaugurated the harvesting of new varieties of BRI-86 paddy. Upazila Secondary Education Officer Selim Akhter, Upazila Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Rumana  Parveen, Md Abdul Alim, Md Aliuzzaman and farmers were present. 

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, BRI-86 rice seeds were first collected from Iran. Subsequently, after research at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, it was found to be satisfactory and in 2017, the National Seed Board cleared the variety for cultivation in the farmer's field during the boro season. After releasing the variety, Ishwardi Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Latif distributed 100 kg seeds of BRI-86 among 20 farmers of the upazila for cultivation.

Agriculture Officer Abdul Latif said, “BRI-86 variety of rice seeds were collected from Iran. The life span of this rice is 140 to 145 days. This variety of paddy yields six to six and a half tons per hectare. He said that the yield will be higher if proper care is taken.”
