Police remanded a number of powerful former government figures on Wednesday in relation to a murder case involving the student anti-discrimination movement. They were presented in court on the same day, where remand applications were filed.
According to sources from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Salam Murshedi, Nazrul Islam Majumdar, and two former secretaries were arrested the night before. They were brought to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Wednesday afternoon.
Tensions flared outside the court as supporters of the BNP clashed with those backing the accused. The court granted varying remands: Salam Murshedi for 10 days in the Adabar police station murder case, Nazrul Islam Majumdar in a Jatrabari case, and Kamal Nasser and former secretary Mejbah Uddin in a Paltan police station murder case. Nasik Adnan, coordinator of the Bashundhara group, was also remanded in a case linked to the Gulshan police.
During the hearing, the state's lawyer emphasised the accused's involvement in suppressing the student movement, while the defence requested cancellation of the remands. Ultimately, the court granted different remand periods for each individual.
Earlier that morning, the court also granted former Prime Minister's adviser Salman F. Rahman a four-day remand in a Nawabganj explosive case and a three-day remand in a murder case from the Doha police station.
Additionally, MP Jannat Ara Henry and her husband, Shamim Talukdar Labu, received a seven-day remand in the murder case of Jubo Dal leader Ranju, who was killed during the student protests. Former MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury from Noakhali-4 was ordered to be sent to jail.
