Saidur Rahman new BSMMU VC

Professor Saidur Rahman has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). The appointment was announced on Tuesday through a notification issued by the Health Education and Family Welfare Department under the Ministry of Health.

Professor Saidur Rahman, who currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology at BSMMU, has taken over the role after the resignation of the previous Vice-Chancellor, Professor Md. Nurul Haque. This appointment has been approved by the President and Chancellor of the university.

According to the official notification, Professor Saidur Rahman’s appointment comes with several conditions. First, his term as Vice-Chancellor will last for four years. During this period, he will receive the same pay and benefits as his current position. After completing his formal retirement, he will continue serving as Vice-Chancellor for the remainder of his term. Additionally, he will enjoy all the benefits attached to the Vice-Chancellor’s post as per university rules. 

He is also expected to perform his duties in line with Section 14 of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Act, 1998. Importantly, the President and Acharya have the authority to cancel this appointment at any time if necessary.

The order, issued in the public interest, is effective immediately.

In a related development, Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, from the Department of Development Studies at Dhaka University, has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University. Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, who is currently the Vice-Chancellor of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), will take on this new role after receiving approval from the President.
