Safer use of roads to stop accidents stressed

Officials at a discussion in Rangpur on Friday stressed on ensuring safer use of roads, enhancing professional skill of drivers and abiding by traffic rules to stop road accidents and reduce the extent of deaths.

They made the observation at the discussion held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in observance of the National Road Safety Day-2021 in the metropolis.

The district administration, Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) chalked out programmes like releasing balloons and discussion marking the day.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan launched the observance of the day by releasing balloons on his office premises in presence of government officials, politicians, drivers, helpers and civil society members.

Presided over by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) AWM Raihan Shah, the Deputy Commissioner attended the discussion as the chief guest. Executive Engineer of RHD Mahbub Alam, Divisional Deputy Director (Engineering) of Rangpur Circle of BRTA Md Ashrafuzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP) Menhajul Alam,

Assistant Director for Rangpur Circle of BRTA Engineer Md Faruk Alam, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP) of Rangpur Highway Police Zahidur Rahman Chowdhury, ASP (Traffic-North) of RpMP Jamir Uddin, among others, addressed the occasion.

The speakers said lack of awareness, inadequate skill of some drivers, violation of traffic rules, faulty vehicles, roadside hat-bazaars, drying of crops on the roads and using mobile phones while driving are major reasons behind accidents. They mentioned that overtaking competitions also cause road accidents taking a heavy toll of human lives. Deputy Director of BRTA Ashrafuzzaman put maximum importance on providing training to drivers on driving and traffic rules and obeying traffic rules strictly by all concerned to avoid road accidents. 

The chief guest suggested the drivers, vehicle owners and common people to become aware of severe consequences of road accidents and strictly follow traffic rules for ensuring safer use of roads to reduce road accidents and loss of human lives.
