‘Safer poultry egg, meat will be produced within five years’

Poultry industry of Bangladesh will produce high quality chicken meat and egg within five years.  The consumers will get nutritious, more tasty and safe poultry, said the industry leaders and poultry experts in an international seminar held on Friday.

World's Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB) organized by the seminar at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB), Dhaka. 

The chief guest of the seminar, Dr Monjur Mohammad Shahjada, Director General, Department of Livestock Services (DLS) said, food Safety is an important agenda of this government, the country has progressed towards achieving poultry food and feed safety. 

“The uses of prebiotics and probiotics has been increasing significantly which indicates that we are avoiding unnecessary uses of antibiotics. The private sector has been contributing a lot to keep poultry meat and egg safe”, he added.

Dr. S M Jahangir Hossain, Director General of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) said, the government of Bangladesh is serious about safe food. Poultry is a scientific sector. Poultry scientists are working hard to ensure production of safe poultry meat, egg and feed.

Moshiur Rahman, president, WPSA- Bangladesh said, people of all ages from children to aged persons consume poultry meat and egg. Therefore we must ensure better safety. Moshiur said, "We have to improve biosecurity  and waste management to reduce disease load. All the unregistered feed mills, breeder farms and commercial poultry farms should be get registered within a short time."

Mahabub Hassan, general secretary, WPSA-Bangladesh said, Bangladesh has started exporting poultry and fish feed since 2019. The industry is preparing to export poultry meat and meat products. Therefore, cost effective production and food & feed safety is very important for us.

Internationally recognized poultry expert Gordon Butland said, the global animal protein industry is going through a very difficult period. After over two years of the Covid pandemic, it is impacted by very high raw material costs due to poor harvests in South America, disease challenges, effects on the economics of the pandemic.

Dr. Santiago Ramirez in his paper said, achieving a cost-competitive and safe poultry production requires an integrative approach across many areas of poultry production from diet formulation and selection of raw materials, bird health, bird welfare and food and feed safety.
