Ryan film doesn't need a sequel: Shawn

The Adam Project director Shawn Levy says he doesn't think the movie needs a sequel. The film, which released on Netflix on March 11, reteams Levy with his Free Guy leading man Ryan Reynolds. The cast also includes Walker Scobell, Catherine Keener, Jennifer Garner, and - should Deadpool ever officially make his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe - Reynolds' future MCU co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldaña.

The Adam Project follows a time traveler from the future (Reynolds) crash landing in 2022. He must team up with his 12-year-old self (Scobell) to fight off a horde of advanced robots and save the future. In the meantime, he must also repair his relationship with his estranged father (Ruffalo), bonding the family across time. The film's early reviews are favorable, earning it a "fresh" 71% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing. Audiences, meanwhile, have it scored 92%.

IndieWire released an interview with Shawn Levy about the movie. Considering that many of his films have spawned sequels and franchises (including Free Guy, Night at the Museum, The Pink Panther, and even Big Fat Liar), they asked him if he feels pressured to take sequels into consideration when developing new projects. He said that it was certainly a consideration when developing The Adam Project, but "I want to leave that one as is." He admits that he could come up with sequel ideas if he was pushed to do so, but "this thing is exactly what we set out to make, and I think we’re just going to leave this here."

Shawn Levy's approach to the film seems to go against the philosophy that has overtaken the industry in recent years. Especially with streaming services like Netflix, blockbuster projects have often been developed with an eye toward spawning future entries, even with teen rom-coms like To All The Boys I've Loved Before or The Kissing Booth. This stance is especially surprising considering Netflix has already greenlit two sequels to Red Notice, another recent Ryan Reynolds project in which he co-starred with The Rock and Gal Gadot.

If The Adam Project is successful, it's more than likely that Netflix will still develop a sequel one way or the other. However, it doesn't sound like Levy would necessarily be on board to make that happen. Considering he's already splitting his time between major projects like Free Guy 2, the miniseries All the Light We Cannot See, and a remake of Starman, he likely wouldn't even be able to find the time in his schedule to consider it anyway. -Screen Rant
